Zoloft

Spina bifida linked to Zoloft use during pregnancy

One of the many conditions that have been linked to Zoloft in an ongoing nationwide lawsuit is spina bifida. Instances of spina bifida have appeared in numerous babies whose mothers took Zoloft during pregnancy.

In normal babies, the two sides of the backbone close around the spinal cord and its nerves during the first month of pregnancy. Babies with spina bifida have backbones that fail to close before birth.

Spina bifida appears in several varieties. In myelomeningocele, the most serious type, the vertebrae’s bones never finish forming. The spinal cord and the tissues attached to it then protrude from the baby’s back, forming a sac.

Another of the more serious forms of spina bifida is meningocele. In babies with this condition, the meninges, protective membranes that surround the spinal cord, push through an opening in the backbone. Meningocele can usually be treated with surgery.

Newborns with spina bifida often display other symptoms, including clubfoot, fluid in the skull, and dimpling or hair growth on the lower back.
