One disorder that has been linked to the drug is esophageal stenosis, also called an esophageal stricture. In infants with this condition, the esophagus, the tube that transports food to the stomach, is narrowed. This narrowing is caused by a buildup of scar tissue inside the tube.
Under normal conditions, the esophagus expands and contracts as muscles move food through the baby’s body. However, damage to the esophagus lining can lead to scarring and stiffness, making the passage of food more difficult. Eventually, the esophagus may become so full of scar tissue that the passageway itself is narrowed.
Symptoms of esophageal stenosis include difficulty or discomfort when swallowing and the reflux or stomach acid into the mouth.
