Heart defects central in lawsuit against Zoloft maker

Heart defects are among the main health problems blamed on Zoloft in a growing lawsuit against the makers of the antidepressant.

The lawsuit is based on evidence that the use of Zoloft during pregnancy led to numerous birth defects in babies across the country. The risk appears to be greatest when Zoloft was taken during the final trimester of pregnancy. Heart defects were among the main conditions found in studies that looked at the possible effects of Zoloft on babies whose mothers took the drug while pregnant.

Heart conditions that have been linked to Zoloft include:

–       Hypoplastic left and right heart syndrome

–       Transposition of the great arteries

–       Atrial septal defect

–       Tetrology of fallot

Zoloft is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor often prescribed for depression, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and stress and anxiety disorders.
